Burglar poses as Caltrans worker

 | Published on 3/1/2011

A man posing as a Caltrans worker allegedly distracted a Woodside resident while a second suspect entered the home and stole jewelry, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the home on the 3500 block of Tripp Road at about 2:30 p.m. Friday after the victim became suspicious of the phony Caltrans worker. The victim never saw the second suspect, who entered the home through an unlocked sliding glass door, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The man who knocked on the victim’s door was wearing a yellow hard hat, a dark blue jacket or vest with gold lettering or initials on the left chest area, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

When the victim became suspicious and started asking the suspect for more identification, he fled, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The victim described the suspect as olive skinned, with a round face, clean shaven, with “big” brown eyes, heavy set and about 5 feet 8 inches tall. The suspect left the area in a newer silver or gray sport-utility type vehicle, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
